i have had to do this off and on with this netbook with some releases in the past. i don't think it's a bug with aptosid so much as a problem with my hardware.

i believe the display doesn't give any values when scanned/queried.

at least now i don't need to start it in init3, it kicks me to the command line itself. "startx" and away it goes.

then to log out cleanly i have to get root priviledges and "init 0".

      Code:
root@siduxbox2:/home/ike# infobash -v3
Host/Kernel/OS  "siduxbox2" running Linux 2.6.36-2.slh.3-aptosid-686 i686 [ sidux 2009-04 Μόρος - kde-lite - (200912310312) ]
CPU Info        VIA C7-M 128 KB cache flags( sse3 nx ) clocked at [ 1000.000 MHz ]
Videocard       VIA , CN896/VN896/P4M900 [Chrome 9 HC]  X.Org 1.7.7  [ [email protected]
Network cards   Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5788 Gigabit
                Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY
Processes 101 | Uptime 25min | Memory 154.8/1771.0MB | HDD ST9120817AS Size 136GB (1%used) | GLX Renderer Software Rasterizer | GLX Version Yes | Client Shell | Infobash v3.34

EDIT: having to "startx" is only running from the live cd. with an installed system, either harddisk or sdcard, no problem. i put info from a system on an sdcard into the codebox without thinking. sorry.

1.) Add experimental Debian sources to your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list:
      Quote:
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ experimental main contrib non-free

2.) Install the latest OpenChrome driver from eperimental:
      Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-openchrome -t experimental

3.) Let Xorg know:
      Code:
mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-openchrome.conf

4.) Edit this new file as following:
      Quote:
#
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device 0"
Driver "openchrome"
EndSection
#

And finally re-start X.

(3 - 4. is optional only, try before if the driver is loaded without this file.)

The new driver version might have improvements related to your problems. On a similar netbook it allowed me to have a fitting screen resolution and basic 3D features.

However, don't expect wonders, though - VIA graphics is extreemely cheap and weak hardware.

Greetings,
Chris

thanks slam.

this machine has a 1g singlecore processor, so i'm happy with just about anything.

(i do have to say though that it sports the best speakers i've heard on any laptop of any size. like a wonderful cherished girlfriend: little box, big bangboom.)

Sounds like a cool machine. Now is it happy with the experimental OpenChrome driver?

I have installed sidux/aptosid several times on HP Mininotes, but cannot really recommend them. The hardware is weak, display and keyboard are really low quality, and you need experimental drivers/firmware, etc. just to get them running. There are much better hardware offers (e.g. Intel based) in the same price range by now.

Note: HP in general does good hardware, worth it's money. The Mininotes are an exception from that, have been their "not so great" first try on the netbook market.

Greetings,
Chris
